Question 11: Serial Number

Most Los Angeles Olds instruments have the serial number stamped on the right side of the middle valve casing just below the leadpipe, but there are some other locations where the serial number may be located. Some of these locations will require that the valve pistons be removed and various parts of the valve assemble to be taken apart. If you are not comfortable with taking this apart, then answer what you can.

Serial number located on the right side of the middle valve casing just below the leadpipe. This is most common.

The serial number is located on the left side of the valve casing and is in a vertical format.

For Los Angeles production, this is likely only the Mendez model.

The serial number is stamped on the lower part of the valve casing. This is only on very early models.

In addition to the valve casing, the serial number may also be found in other locations.

Valve spring barrels

Top of the valve stems (under the cork or felts)

Underside of the top valve caps

Bottom valve caps – typically only the last two digits of the serial number, but early instruments may have the full serial number.

Inner slide tubes – sometimes the last two digits of the serial number are stamped on each of the slides. Typically late 1930’s through late 1940’s instruments.

On the bell. Not common at all but on some US Military instruments.
